A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves up to 4 metres and prompting mass evacuations. Severo-Kurilsk was flooded and several injuries were reported. The quake, among the strongest ever recorded, caused widespread alerts across the Pacific. Japan issued a tsunami warning, urging nearly two million residents to evacuate coastal areas. Waves over 1 metre reached Japan's Iwate and Hokkaido regions, with Sendai Airport shutting down and the Fukushima nuclear plant evacuating workers as a precaution.
