Ils sont aujourd’hui quinze mille descendants d’Algériens à vivre en Nouvelle-Calédonie. À la fin du XIXe siècle, c'est une terre de bagne pour les condamnés de France et de ses colonies. Parmi eux, deux mille Maghrébins sont punis pour leur participation à la révolte kabyle, qui ébranla la présence coloniale française en Algérie. Depuis l’île des Pins, où ils ont été débarqués, la plupart ne reverront jamais leur pays natal.
