LIVE: Yemen's Houthis to Execute Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya on July 16 | Spotlight | N18GAn Indian nurse, Nimisha Priya, faces execution in Yemen on July 16 after being convicted of murdering a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi. A fallout in 2016 led to accusations of abuse against Mahdi. In 2017, Priya allegedly injected Mahdi with sedatives to retrieve her passport, leading to his death from an overdose. She was convicted in 2018, and her death sentence was upheld by Yemen's Supreme Court in 2023. Her only hope lies in Mahdi's family accepting "Diya" or blood money, which they have so far refused. The situation is complicated by India's lack of formal diplomatic ties with the Houthi-controlled region where Priya is imprisoned. Despite these hurdles, Indian officials are in contact with Yemeni authorities and Priya's family as the "Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council" campaigns for her release.
