Indian police raid Kashmiri bookstores, seizing books tied to Islamic group
Approximately 668 books associated with a major Indian Islamic organisation were seized by police officers in India-administered Kashmir, beginning February 14.The officers have primarily targeted Islamic texts published by New Delhi-based Markazi Maktaba Islami Publishers. Police are quoted saying such books were “found to be in violation of legal regulations, and strict action is being taken against those found in possession of such material,” according to AP.
The publishing house is affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, the Indian subcontinent’s largest Islamic organisation: the group was banned from engaging in political activity in India-administered Kashmir in 2019.
Among the specific writers targeted is Abul Ala Maududi, a twentieth-century Islamic scholar and advocate who founded Jamaat-e-Islami and theorised for an integration of state and religion.
In capital city Srinagar, resistance leaders and everyday residents have expressed their disbelief in the Indian government’s recent move of censorship.
