Disponible jusqu'au 08/04/2027Après la tenue du sommet de la Terre de Rio, et l'élection de Bill Clinton et de son vice-président Al Gore en 1992, les industriels ripostent. La Global Climate Coalition (GCC), un groupe de pression, finance des études biaisées, soutient des experts climatosceptiques et mène un intense lobbying pour semer la confusion et retarder toute régulation.
Parallèlement, la mondialisation s'accélère. Alors que les émissions de gaz à effet de serre explosent, le protocole de Kyoto, qui vise à les réduire, est adopté fin 1997. Mais l'échec de sa ratification aux États-Unis, puis l'arrivée au pouvoir de George W. Bush sonnent comme une victoire pour les industriels. Si la GCC disparaît, sa stratégie perdure à travers des think tanks ultralibéraux, proches des extrêmes droites populistes, qui infiltrent les conférences internationales sur le climat et profitent de la caisse de résonance des réseaux sociaux. Bientôt, un mot s'impose face à l'évidente intensification du réchauffement climatique : l'adaptation, stratégie à la fois impérative et inopérante pour freiner la catastrophe, envisagée depuis longtemps comme la seule option réaliste par les élites politiques et économiques.
