Rasheed Wallace's Air Force Ones & Plantar Fasciitis (2004 Playoffs)

May 24, 2004 - Could there have been a connection between Rasheed Wallace's postseason bout with plantar fasciitis and his insistence upon wearing Nike Air Force Ones as his go-to on-court basketball shoe? Perhaps, though the counterpoint there would be that Wallace was one of many who hooped in AFIs over the years with most escaping debilitating arch issues along the way.

In 2022, as a guest on the All the Smoke podcast, Wallace confirmed his AFI’s featured a slight modification.

“I had orthotics,” Wallace revealed. “It wasn’t the pancake inner sole for me, dog. Of course I had the orthotics in there. It was all business.”

Wallace went on to cite the motivation behind his early transition to Forces.

“In high school, I had a couple little twisted ankle injuries,” Wallace said. “And in college, I had a couple bad twisted ankle injuries and it was from the shoes I was playing in. So I was like I gotta go with some high tops, some real high tops, you know, tape my ankle or wear an ankle brace, tie it up, and I’m good money.”

The clip above is a double feature: It provides a nice clean look at Rasheed Wallace's signature shoe while detailing his struggle to play pain-free during the 2004 postseason, one that saw the Detroit Pistons win their third NBA championship.
