Kegiatan ini menjadi bagian dari rangkaian peringatan 80 tahun kemerdekaan Indonesia yang diselenggarakan oleh Kementerian Kebudayaan.
Fadli Zon mengatakan peluncuran prangko ini merupakan bentuk penghargaan terhadap jasa para pendiri bangsa. Fadli menjelaskan, terdapat 79 tokoh yang diabadikan dalam seri prangko ini, mencakup anggota BPUPKI (Badan Penyelidik Usaha-usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia), Panitia Sembilan, dan PPKI (Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia).
Selain tokoh, terdapat satu prangko gedung Raad Van Indie di Pejambon 2, Jakarta, sehingga total 80 prangko. Edisi perdana Prangko Para Pendiri Bangsa dicetak terbatas yakni hanya 500 set.
