India already has more than one billion internet subscriptions, but access remains sharply divided between rural and urban areas. BharatNet is expanding fibre connectivity across rural India, while satellite internet offers another way to reach remote, mountainous and disaster-prone regions. But Starlink's potential India entry also raises difficult questions about national security, data, network control and law enforcement. The reports of Starlink terminals being used in Iran has added urgency to those concerns. Daniela Laurel tells you more.
