The film fully embraces its chaotic arcade energy instead of trying to become a serious prestige blockbuster, and honestly, that works in its favour.

The story follows Earthrealm’s champions as they enter the Mortal Kombat tournament once again to save the world from Shao Kahn and Outworld. But let’s be honest, nobody is watching a Mortal Kombat movie for deep storytelling. People come for the fights, the finishers, and the insane fatalities, and on that front, the movie absolutely delivers.

Karl Urban steals the show as Johnny Cage, bringing effortless charisma, hilarious one-liners, and the exact chaotic energy this movie needs. The action sequences are stylish and entertaining, even if some moments lean heavily into CGI. The humour lands surprisingly well throughout, especially with Kano and Johnny Cage carrying many of the film’s funniest moments.
That said, the movie does slow down slightly in the middle, and the villain feels far less memorable than the heroes. The story itself is fairly basic, but again, this franchise has always been more about spectacle than narrative depth.

At the end of the day, Mortal Kombat II is messy, ridiculous, funny, violent, and fully aware of what it is. And that’s exactly why it works.
