Mexico's most powerful drug boss ‘El Mencho’ killed, sparking cartel violence nationwide

The Mexican army has killed a drug boss who led one of the country's most powerful criminal organisations.
Nemesio Oseguera, or "El Mencho," was the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The gang is known for trafficking drugs into the US, which had put a $15-million bounty on El Mencho's arrest.
His killing has triggered a wave of violence in several areas.
The Mexican Embassy in Washington says US intelligence contributed to the operation that led to his death.

Al Jazeera’s John Holman reports from Mexico City.

Transcript:
Across vast swaves of Mexico this Sunday, chaos. Convenience stores and petrol stations torched. Trucks dragged across roads and set on fire. Narco roadblocks they call them here. Plumes of smoke from resort city Puerto Vata. Panicked customers running through Guadlara airport. Flights canled. And fear. Look, now we're scared. We only go out when it's necessary because people don't know whether to go out or what to do. The reason Mexico's most powerful drug trafficker was killed by the country's armed forces on Sunday morning. This was his men retaliating. Nessio Sagera alias Eleno, head of the Halisco New Generation Cartel. His organization controls swaves of Mexico is present in all 50 states of the US trafficking cocaine and fentinil. But now it's leaderless. It was a Mexico special forces operation with the help of US intelligence. President Trump's demanded more action against the cartels. He got it. They descended on the holiday town of Tapalpa, gravely wounding Elmeno. The army says they airlifted him to hospital, but he died on route, leaving the Mexican government triumphant, but with a question. What comes next? Not the immediate violence which seemed to be dying at the close of Sunday, but in the weeks and months ahead. We've seen this so many times in Mexico. A leader gets killed or captured and then a succession battle breaks out that's even bloodier than what came before. And that's an especi

grip on the cartel and left no direct successor. The Mexican government will now be desperate for its success not to turn into an even bloodier mess. John Hullman, Al Jazzer, Mexico City.
