Kepada wartawan di kediamannya, Sofian membenarkan, Rismon Sianipar, ahli forensik digital dan alumni UGM yang akhir-akhir ini ramai karena mempertanyakan keaslian ijazah Jokowi dan beberapa alumni UGM lain berkunjung ke rumahnya.
Mereka mengajak Sofian Effendi untuk melakukan telekonferensi dengan alumni lain yang tinggal di sejumlah kota berbeda membicarakan kebebasan akademik.
Dalam pembicaraan itu disebutnya juga ada salah satu muridnya dari Aceh hingga Kalimantan.
Sofian mengakui dirinya tidak tahu jika percakapan itu kemudian dibingkai untuk mengomentari isu ijazah palsu mantan Presiden Jokowi.
Selama percakapan dengan alumni, ia mengira bahwa obrolan itu berkaitan dengan ruang kebebasan akademik dan hanya diperuntukkan bagi internal, bukan publik.
Ia pun mengaku tidak sadar obrolan itu akan dipublikasikan.
Dengan viralnya video itu, ia pun tak menyangka sebab omongannya tak pantas untuk dibawa ke ruang publik.
Untuk itu, Sofian meminta maaf kepada semua pihak yang dia sebutkan di dalam video tersebut, tidak terkecuali Rektor UGM saat ini, Prof. Ova Emilia.
Sofian mengaku tidak ingin diadu dengan Prof Ova, terlebih dirinya adalah anggota organisasi UGM.
