MARVEL Cosmic Invasion - Arcade (Hard) 1CC - Black Panther/Silver Surfer
Marvel: Cosmic Invasion is the newest beat 'em up from DotEmu and Tribute Games, the team that brought us TMNT Shredder's Revenge a few years ago. Shredder's Revenge was an excellent game, so I was looking forward to this from the moment it was announced. This time, since they had the Marvel license to work with, they took inspiration from Marvel vs. Capcom and included a tag mechanic that lets you swap between characters almost instantly to keep a constant combo barrage going. On normal difficulty, the game is easy to the point of making it boring, but Arcade mode on Hard difficulty makes it a lot more fun.I used Wolverine and Ghost Rider for my first clear, so I went with a similar setup for my second clear. Black Panther plays a lot like Wolverine, but he's just not as good. His dagger is useful and his uppercut does a nice chunk of damage, but he just doesn't have the survivability of Wolverine, or the crowd control ability (thanks to Wolvie's throw). He's still a very good character, but when you go from an S+ tier to maybe an A+, you can feel the difference. Silver Surfer is very strong too, but his floatiness takes some getting used to. Sometimes you'll find yourself doing dive attacks because you pressed the button a little too early, before he fully gets back into a grounded state. But other than that, his laser is extremely good and his basic 3 hit combo has really high DPS. He feels like a bit of a glass cannon, but he's an excellent character if you can keep him alive.
This time I chose different stages at the branching paths, except I went with Heteropteron over Fort Galactus again. I think the Galactus stage is the most dangerous one in the game, thanks to the final battle with Silver Surfer. Galactus is constantly spawning traps on the floor, and stepping in them is practically a death sentence. Silver Surfer himself isn't an issue if your parry character is still alive, but Galactus is constantly interrupting you. Meanwhile, the bosses in Heteropteron are some of the easiest ones in the game, so there's a night and day difference in terms of difficulty here.
For the other stages, Genosha is a lot more fun than Helicarrier, but I don't like Wakanda as much as Savage Land (the boss in Wakanda is really tedious). Asgard is both easier and more fun than Destromundo too, and Hela is a much better boss than Venom.
I'm still enjoying this game, the only thing that bugs me about it now are the bosses. Phyla Vell is a huge pain if you lose your parry character or even get hit, because she does void damage to you, which locks you up and leaves you open for more free hits unless you can tag out. But if you parry loop her, she's pretty free... just don't mess up too much. And that's the case with several bosses in this game. If you parry loop them, they're not too bad. If you fight them with a character that has a dodge, they're slow and annoying thanks to having super armor on everything. It's just poorly balanced.
I'm not sure what team to use next, to be honest... I like having one fast attacker (like BP/Wolvie), and one guy with range and a parry, but I think I've run out of that Wolverine archetype... this clear was harder than my first one too, so using an even weaker team (or at least one that doesn't suit me) after this might cause some problems. We'll see!
Thanks to DotEmu for sending over a review key!
