Berdasarkan data Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), pusat gempa berada di koordinat 7,25 Lintang Selatan dan 114,22 Bujur Timur.
Pusat gempa berjarak sekitar 50 kilometer tenggara Sumenep, Jatim dengan kedalaman 11 kilometer.
Setelah gempa pertama mengguncang, BMKG mencatat ada empat kali gempa susulan yang terjadi hingga pukul 00.29 WIB, dengan magnitudo terbesar M 4,4.
Gempa utama yang awalnya berkekuatan magnitudo (M) 6,5 ini kemudian diperbarui BMKG menjadi M 6,0 usai dilakukan analisis lebih lanjut.
Menurut keterangan Direktur Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami BMKG, Daryono, gempa di Sumenep ini termasuk jenis gempa dangkal.
Meskipun tidak berpotensi tsunami, namun guncangan kuat gempa ini dirasakan oleh mayoritas warga Sumenep.
Guncangan gempa menyebabkan terjadinya sejumlah kerusakan di rumah warga.
Ada tembok yang mengelupas dan muncul retakan di dinding, hingga gedung rumah warga yang dilaporkan pecah.
Adapun Daryono mengimbau masyarakat untuk tetap tenang dan tidak gampang percaya terhadap informasi yang tidak dapat dipertanggungjawabkan.
