Doch 2020 beschloss die Bundesregierung, spätestens bis 2038 aus der Kohleverstromung auszusteigen. Um die sozialen Folgen abzufedern, wurde ein umfangreiches Förderprogramm aufgelegt: 4,8 Milliarden Euro sind für Sachsen-Anhalt vorgesehen, zusätzlich fließen Mittel aus der Europäischen Union.
