Situs yang dapat diakses lewat mbgwatch.org tersebut diinisiasi oleh sejumlah lembaga sipil di antaranya Celios, Unitrend, Lapor Sehat, LBH Jakarta, Transparency International Indonesia, dan Bareng Warga.
Situs tersebut dibentuk sebagai sarana untuk memantau, mengawasi hingga melaporkan perkembangan sejumlah isu terkait program MBG kepada publik secara real time. irektur Keadilan Fiskal Celios, Media Wahyudi, mengatakan bahwa pihaknya sudah melalukan studi terkait MBG, khususnya soal bencana kesehatan yang seharusnya bisa dimitigasi, sehingga anggaran MBG bisa tepat sasaran.
Di kesempatan yang sama, Project Adviser Unitred Rizky Dwi Lestari menjelaskan cara kerja MBG Watch adalah pada bagaimana merangkum kejadian-kejadian atau isu-isu yang terjadi di lapangan lewat media massa. Di laman MBG Watch, beberapa fiturnya tersedia antara lain berita terkini yang diambil dari sejumlah portal berita daring terkait isu MBG.
Dari berita-berita tersebut, MBG Watch mengategorikan sentimen ke 3 bagian: positif, negatif, dan netral. Kemudian, publik juga bisa mengadukan isu terkait MBG ke MBG Watch di bagian Pengaduan. Ada nomor hotline hingga form jika ingin mengisi aduan soal MBG.
