El cuadro del hambre y el nacimiento del Museo del Prado en 1819
El Museo del Prado inaugura el formato expositivo “Una obra, una historia”, con el El año del hambre en Madrid, de José Aparicio.Aclamada como un gran hito artístico de su tiempo, jaleada en la prensa, multiplicada en estampas, celebrada en canciones y poemas, esta pintura de historia también sirvió como artefacto político. La reconstrucción de su ubicación original en el Museo del Prado en 1819, convertida en uno de sus principales iconos —por encima de obras hoy indiscutibles como Las meninas—, desvela el peaje ideológico que impuso el absolutismo de Fernando VII.
Este enorme cuadro (315 x 437 cm), hoy desconocido para el gran público, acaparó en su día todas las miradas en el museo, donde llegó a eclipsar a las figuras de Francisco de Goya y José de Madrazo durante el reinado de Fernando VII.
La muestra analiza el auge y caída de una gloria nacional que pasó de ser la metáfora visual más potente de la España del siglo XIX a convertirse en mera anécdota local. Mediante este ejercicio expositivo, el Prado invita a reflexionar sobre los vaivenes del arte y de la crítica, la propaganda, la invención del gusto y el papel de los museos.
