Periods are present in all of our lives, yet when they’re considered too private to discuss, the consequences can be devastating. I’ve spent the past four years asking people to tell me about their periods in communities across Kenya, Malawi, Eswatini, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. These stories are significant and demonstrate our shared responsibility to consider menstruation a fundamental pillar of life. Ensuring all people have access to menstrual products, education, and dignity in our bodies is much deeper than just having a more comfortable “that time of the month.” It is the foundation of which half the population needs if we are ever to achieve a true form of equity, dignity, and overall sustainable poverty alleviation.Emma is a passionate researcher, advocate, educator, and storyteller who is actively working towards global menstrual equity. She graduated with a B.S. in International Development from Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) in San Diego, California where she founded the holistic menstruation research initiative: Akinyi (www.akinyi.net). Emma is now the Lead Research Associate for the Center for International Development at PLNU, expanding Akinyi’s work throughout Africa, South America, North America, and Southeast Asia. Although her work requires consistent travel to countries across the globe, Emma prioritizes visiting her hometown in Fort Collins often, making sure to include a drive up Horsetooth and a bagel from Gibbs whenever possible!
