Prima vittima del 2026 in Veneto per infezione da West Nile, virus trasmesso dalle zanzare. Il decesso è avvenuto in provincia di Padova, domenica 16 agosto. A perdere la vita un uomo di 84 anno di Piazzola sul Brenta che già soffriva di diverse patologie. Era stato ricoverato all'ospedale di Civitella prima nel reparto di Medicina poi in quello di Neurologia, come ha spiegato da Luca Sbrogiò, direttore del dipartimento di prevenzione dell'Ulss 6 Euganea, nelle dichiarazioni riportate dai media locali. Nella provincia di Padova, ha indicato ancora Sbrogiò, sono 37 i casi registrati di West Nile, con un aumento di infezioni nelle ultime due settimane, legate anche al clima di questi giorni. I casi neurologici sono 12, gli altri sono prevalentemente febbrili. In generale, in Italia, l'ultimo bollettino dell'Istituto superiore di Sanità, evidenzia che da inizio anno al 12 agosto «sono stati segnalati in Italia 226 casi confermati di infezione da West Nile nell'uomo (141 nel report precedente), di cui 102 si sono manifestati nella forma neuro-invasiva (un caso importato dalle Maldive), 38 casi asintomatici identificati in donatori di sangue, 86 casi di febbre (un caso importato da Burkina Faso).
