Mochtar Lubis, lahir di Padang, Sumatera Barat, 7 Mei 1922 dan meninggal dunia di Jakarta, 2 Juli 2004 pada usia 82 tahun.
Ia wafat di Rumah Sakit Medistra lantaran mengidap berbagai penyakit, salah satunya Alzheimer.
Jenazahnya dibawa dan dimakamkan di Tempat Pemakaman Umum (TPU) Jeruk Purut, Jakarta Selatan.
Sementara itu, semasa hidupnya Mochtar Lubis mendirikan dan memimpin media pemberitaan harian Indonesia Raya.
Saat ini kantor berita tersebut dilarang terbit karena framing informasi yang ditayangkan dinilai kritis terhadap pemerintah.
Ia juga dikenal sebagai seorang pemberani dalam mengkritik kebijakan negara.
Maka dari itu, pada masa rezim Soekarno, ia harus mendekam di penjara hampir sembilan tahun.
Hal itu dilakukan guna membungkam daya kritis Mochtar Lubis, namun ia tetap produktif menulis dalam jeruji.
Di sisi lain, banyak orang terinspirasi untuk menulis banyak karya.
Semangat Mochtar Lubis kian membara sampai ia tutup usia, karyanya masih dikenang orang.
