Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video on the the Fall of the British Empire in the Cold War period. At its height, the British Empire governed roughly a quarter of the world’s land and dominated the seas. A few generations later, its colonies were independent and Britain was no longer the world’s leading power. How did an empire of that scale come apart? Its collapse unfolded over decades, with different outcomes across continents. This video follows the pressures that accumulated long before decolonization. American and German industry challenged Britain’s economic lead, while the First World War drained its finances and shifted the center of global finance toward New York. The dominions gained greater autonomy, but demands for self-government in India and elsewhere met resistance. The Second World War delivered another blow. The fall of Singapore shattered imperial prestige, and the costs of fighting left Britain dependent on American support. After 1945, anti-colonial movements gathered force, India and Pakistan won independence, and more territories followed. Britain tried to retain influence through the Commonwealth, but the 1956 Suez Crisis exposed the limits of its power. From war debts and industrial competition to independence movements and Cold War politics, we trace the connected causes behind the fall of the British Empire, and why victory in two world wars could not preserve it.
