Dodonpachi Resurrection Black Label - Zatsuza 1CC (1.027 Trillion)
I took a small break after my recent Hibachi clear (https://youtu.be/giOfaBV2hf4) to play other games, then I went back to this a few days ago. I did not expect to get a Zatsuza clear so quickly, but I'm not complaining!For those who aren't aware, I'll just go over the basics about this game. In DDPR Black Label, Bomb and Power style use the enemy bullet patterns from the first loop of the original game (version 1.5). Strong style uses the second loop's enemy attacks, so they're more dense, and more dangerous. Black Label also has the new Red Gauge mechanic, where using your laser and rapid-shot in conjunction gives you a boost in firepower at the cost of cranking up the red gauge, which is essentially dynamic difficulty. As the red gauge fills up, enemies will start shooting 2-3x as many bullets, so if you aren't prepared for how to handle it, you'll probably die quickly. The upside to keeping that gauge full is, of course, high scores. Your hyper can cancel enemy bullets, and in turn, those bullets are converted into points, so it encourages you to clump as many solid walls of bullets together as you can before wiping them out.
This is where Strong style really differs from the other two modes. Cancelling an enemy bullet while the gauge is full causes it to spawn a revenge bullet that aims directly at you in Strong style. This keeps you moving and adds a bit of danger to each situation. This doesn't happen in the other two modes, so if you watch the masters play them, you'll see a lot of corner hugging as the hyper eats away at all of the bullets. If you're into that, that's cool, and I'm sure getting the really high scores requires meticulous planning, but it just looks boring to me. I don't need games to be super hard to be fun, but I do like a certain level of difficulty... and to me, Strong style is a very well balanced mode that makes all of its systems work together perfectly.
Strong style is also the only way to fight this game's secret last boss, Zatsuza (which is just Hibachi with each letter of the alphabet rolled back 8 places). To reach him, you have to clear the entire game without dying, destroy every boss with a full Red Gauge, collect every hidden bee item, and use no more than 2 bombs until Golden Disaster (then you can use all the bombs). It sounds like a lot, but the main thing you really need to worry about is just not dying. The rest comes along with putting together your strategies, and you don't have to think about it too much. Hibachi has nearly identical requirements, the main difference is you can die once and still get Hibachi. But Hibachi is just the consolation prize for screwing up, since he's not worth many points. Zatsuza is worth 110 billion, which is a pretty hefty chunk on its own. It's not *QUITE* valuable enough to prevent the most diligent score chasers from foregoing the boss in favor of planned deaths, but it is what it is. That's my only knock against this game, since I like the deathless requirement and a final super boss to end everything on, but that's just a personal nitpick. Other than that, this is definitely one of the best shmups I've ever played, and by extension, one of the best games I've ever played. Cave owns.
So with all that out of the way, the major mistakes in this run are in stage 4. First, I used 4 hypers to milk hits from the big laser enemy near the start, but I should have only used 3. I should only use 4 if I'm going to pick up the three bees at 17:08 without using a hyper, which I didn't do here. Or I can use 4 hypers at the start, then do a couple of cycles of boss milking for both score and meter, which I also didn't do here. I played everything safe, but that left me one hyper short for stage 5. Honestly, I wasn't sure how it would work out, so I was hoping it would go in my favor, but I ended up needing to sacrifice the last huge hit count boost. Oh well! I'm happy enough that I reached my goal of getting a Zatsuza clear with at least a trillion points after all the time I've put into this game.
