In this video, Matthew King talks about THREE extraordinary masterpieces, all composed specifically for performance on Good Friday: Bach's St. Matthew and St. John's Passion, and Wagner's Parsifal. All three works contain music of unsurpassed quality. Matthew King reflects on how music, when combined with a journey of the soul, can produce a kind of miracle.

Musical excerpts include performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion by Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Jos van Veldhoven; Collegium Vocale Gent conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, and Solomon's Knot.

The orchestral excerpts from the Prelude to Wagner's Parsifal come from Matthew King's Chamber Orchestra version of Parsifal performed by the Mahler Players, and conducted by Tomas Leakey.

In May 2026 the Mahler Players will give two semi-staged performances of Wagner’s final work, Parsifal with a wonderful cast including Sir John Tomlinson, returning in his signature role of Gurnemanz, alongside the Mahler Players orchestra and chorus, conducted by Tomas Leakey. These will be the first complete performances of Parsifal in Scotland since 2003.
The performances will be on Wednesday 27th May 2026, 4pm, and Sunday 31st May 2026, 4pm, in Inverness Cathedral.
