Black Boys “Do" Read | Malcolm Mitchell | TEDxEmory

In this talk, Malcolm will dismantle the myth that Black boys are disengaged from literacy by sharing my journey from a reluctant reader to a Super Bowl champion and national literacy advocate, revealing how reading is not merely an academic skill but a form of freedom, identity, and self-permission; through personal storytelling and cultural reflection, he shows how expectations shape outcomes, how too many Black boys are taught to hide curiosity instead of celebrate it, and how literacy becomes the bridge between who they are told they can be and who they are capable of becoming, ultimately calling on educators, families, and communities to stop questioning whether Black boys read and start building environments that expect, support, and honor them as readers, leaders, and thinkers.
Malcolm Mitchell, a native of Valdosta, Georgia, is an accomplished author, literacy advocate, and former professional athlete. As a high school senior, he was named an Under Armour All-American and went on to rank among the top ten all-time receivers in University of Georgia (UGA) history.
Malcolm’s love of reading blossomed during his freshman year at UGA, though it began as a challenge. Through perseverance, books became a gateway to curiosity, creativity, and learning. In 2015, he authored and published his first children’s book, The Magician’s Hat, and launched a youth literacy initiative, Read with Malcolm. The following year, he founded Share the Magic Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to inspiring young readers. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed books to more than 350,000 children and delivered Read with Malcolm literacy programming to over two million students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
