Truxton Extreme - 1,000,000,000+α (Arcade Loop 9)

Yesterday I managed to reach a billion points, after an almost 12 hour run. The bullet speed still seems to be increasing with each loop, so I'm not sure if I can truly say I could have kept going endlessly, but getting this extra digit was my goal and I ended my credit after 10-1.

You'd think with all those lives stocked up I'd just be taking it easy and going through the motions, but that wasn't really the case... Since I didn't have time to play a full credit until I had a day off from work, I used some of my free time to practice the hardest areas in training mode, and I didn't really touch anything else. So I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish so many loops, especially if I picked up a bad weapon or started losing lives rapidly. There were times I'd die 3 or 4 times in one stage and I'd think that I'd start spiraling down, but I held it all together in the end. I started playing some areas more safely, using bombs where I normally wouldn't, but it's still easy to get hit when bullets are flying at you so quickly. I was getting tired by the end, too...

But I'm glad I reached my goal. It'd be easier to stretch a credit like this out for multiple days on console, because they have sleep mode, but that seems like it'd be more of a hassle on PC. Plus I always wanted to try a marathon run like this, since being able to maintain focus and keep playing well for so long can be a challenge in itself.

Anyway, I've really enjoyed this game. It's pretty high quality in all areas. It has the same peaks-and-valley pacing of prior games, which is probably polarizing, but I think you need that type of flow for an infinite loop, marathon game like this one. You don't want to be pressured non-stop for 12 hours... It helps to have some breaks in the action, where you can refill your meter and relax your focus a bit. The scoring is pretty well thought out, with no glaring exploits and a simple chaining system to reward consistent play. The EX attack causes enemies to drop gold when destroyed, and it also reveals hidden score items, so trying to use that smartly keeps you more engaged than just moving and shooting. The flow is pretty similar to Muchi Muchi Pork, which is also a really fun game. The graphics and music are great too, so overall I don't really have any complaints. Like I said in my review, maybe it's too easy, but that mostly stems from how forgiving recovery is. You can regain your speed and power quickly, but you can also put yourself in a really bad situation if you accidentally pick up a weak weapon and start dying repeatedly. But it's a console game, so it's just going to be more forgiving. I've had a great time with it, and that's all that really matter.

Oh, and something I forgot to mention before is that stage 8 has multiple different enemy formations that you can get. I'm not sure what determines it, but in this credit, I think I got all of the different variations. It's cool that they mix things up like that.
It also seems like the big Epcot balls in stage 2 drop a 1up in every loop if you destroy them all without dying. I died there in this run, and in most of these loops, so I'm not totally sure about that. The homing shot is bad there once you get to loop 5 or so, but I just kept using it because I never practiced with anything else. I did accidentally pick up the blue shot there once and it seemed really good, so that's probably the right move.

Maybe the next step for the true Tatsujins is to get 1 billion points starting from loop 10...? That probably isn't going to be me though.
