Soekarno kecil lahir di tengah kondisi ekonomi keluarga yang sulit, bahkan sang ibu tak dibantu dukun beranak.
Ayahnya, Raden Soekemi Sosrodihardjo, seorang guru keturunan bangsawan yang berasal dari garis Sultan Kediri.
Sedangkan ibunya, Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai, keponakan dari Raja terakhir Singaraja di Bali.
Soekarno lahir di Surabaya, tepatnya di Pandean yang kini jadi bagian dari Kampung Peneleh.
Momen kelahirannya bertepatan dengan meletusnya Gunung Kelud di Jawa Timur yang kemudian ditafsirkan macam-macam.
Seperti penyambutan hingga pertanda kemarahan karena kelahiran yang tidak pantas.
Soekarno juga dijuluki sebagai Putra sang Fajar karena ia lahir pukul 05.30 saat fajar menyingsing.
Selain itu, juga merujuk pada tahun lahirnya, 1901 yang jadi awal mula abad yang baru.
