Tutto era iniziato con una moto che "batteva in testa" - un colpo secco al momento dell'accelerazione, segnale tipico di un'anomalia nella combustione. Il meccanico aveva subito sospettato il carburante, notando che i motori più moderni, con rapporti di compressione più bassi, tendono a manifestare il problema più tardi rispetto a quelli datati.
Il vero allarme è scattato con un'automobile del 2023, entrata in modalità di protezione il 31 agosto e ridotta a una velocità di 70 km/h per un guasto agli iniettori del terzo e quarto cilindro. Durante un successivo cambio dell'olio, il meccanico ha scoperto la causa reale: il filtro del gasolio era completamente ricoperto da una melma biancastra, e il serbatoio, una volta svuotato, si è rivelato pieno d'acqua per metà.
