The Detroit Pistons' Buddy's Pizza Situation

March 6, 1989 - It may be tough for younger generations to believe, but there was once a time in NBA history when utilizing end-of-game garbage time scenarios to chase milestones or sneak in a quick bucket for the box score was considered fair game. Perhaps few other sequences showcase these dated ethos of decades-gone-by than the Detroit Pistons' desperate push to hit the 130-point threshold as a means of winning Buddy's Pizza for all those in attendance.

Among the plays that would be considered cardinal sins in today's NBA:

1. Rick Mahorn heaving a desperation three early in the shot clock with his team already up by 16 points.

2. Isiah Thomas stealing the ball in the backcourt and converting a quick layup to balloon the Pistons' lead to 18 with less than 20 seconds remaining.

3. The Pistons double teaming in the backcourt to induce one more turnover.

4. Isiah Thomas intentionally fouling to stop the clock.

5. The Pistons calling time-out to set up one final shot at 130.

Alas, it was all for naught. James Edwards' full length pass sailed high and the collective pizza fate of all those in attendance was sealed.

As a final aside, you may have noticed an unfamiliar slab of meat checking in at the 2:20 mark. That's Jim Rowinski, who appeared in six games for the Pistons and was rumored to be able to bench press 420 pounds.

That all being said, the Pistons did earn Buddy's for the Palace earlier in the season against Indiana, seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDcmmzhveQ8
