Iran Criticises “Unjustifiable” UN Sanctions Over Its Nuclear ProgrammeThe United Nations has reinstated sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme. Tehran has condemned these sanctions as "unjustifiable". The Iranian foreign ministry called the move legally baseless and urged all nations to refrain from recognising it. The Iranian government also vowed a firm and appropriate response. Meanwhile, the Iranian parliament denounced the sanctions and went into a closed-door session, likely to discuss the country’s response. Iran is reportedly also mulling abandoning the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and rushing for the bomb. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the country is ready to overcome the sanctions. The sanctions, initiated by the UK, France and Germany at the UNSC, came via a mechanism known as snapback, included in Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Diplomatic efforts at the UNGA by Iran and its allies, Russia and China, failed to stop the sanctions. Iran is already struggling with crippling US sanctions reimposed after Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
