Scott Pilgrim EX - Full Game 1CC + Speedrun (Hard / New Game)
Scott Pilgrim EX is a brand new beat 'em up from Tribute Games, and it's a pseudo-sequel to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World from 2010. The story isn't related, but the gameplay follows a similar format. The EX title makes sense in the context of the story, but it can be confusing at first glance. It made me think this was a remaster or remake of the original, but make no mistake, this is a 100% brand new game - and I think it's far better than the original in every way.I know the original Scott Pilgrim game had a lot of fans, but I never liked it that much. There's no denying the music and aesthetics were great, but the game structure, progression, and especially the combat made it a little boring to me. So 15+ years later, they got a chance to make a sequel, and I'm glad to say they made huge improvements to every aspect of the game. I really enjoyed it this time around, so I wanted to do the two main challenges the game gives you, in a fresh New Game run: the 1CC, and the Speedrun (90 minutes) achievements. The speedrun is a little tight if you include all of the story scenes like I did, since they count against the clock, but if you skip all of that then you probably don't need to worry about it. You can also do these on NG+, on any difficulty, so both achievements are really easy if you want them to be... I'd rather have fun, so it felt pretty well balanced to do it this way. I failed a few times from playing haphazardly because I was worried about the clock, so it's a decent challenge.
This game retains the River City-styled world map and game progression from the original. I'll always prefer an arcade-style, stage-based game structure, but I enjoy stuff like this too, especially if the world is tightly designed and they keep downtime to a minimum. This game does a pretty great job with this, probably more so than either of the River City Girls games (which I also enjoyed). There are shortcuts that can send you from one end of the map to the other, and you can run anywhere you need to go in probably less than a minute, so I have no complaints.
There's an 'adventure' aspect to non-linear/open world games like this too, and as you'd expect, there are plenty of side quests, mini-games, and collectibles to find, if you want to explore the world. But if you strictly follow the main path like I do here, the game moves at a pretty fast pace. You never have to engage with any side content, and you can just have fun fighting enemies and bosses. It moves at a pretty fast pace.
The combat got the biggest upgrade, compared to the previous game. It has more traditional beat 'em up mechanics now, with invincible reversals, combo strings (that can go into Final Fight-style throws), special attacks (I don't like Scott's, so I'm not sure if I ever used them in this run, but other characters have some good moves), assists, a block button, running hop attacks, etc. There's plenty of enemy variety too, with all kinds of different archetypes covered (e.g. flying enemies, ranged, heavy hitting tanks, item users, enemies that try to jump in at you or attack from behind, etc). They do a pretty great job of mixing everything together, so the combat keeps you on your toes and makes you want to single out the most annoying or dangerous enemies when they appear. My one caveat here, is that the higher tier enemies and bosses tend to block a lot, and I don't like how inconsistent it can be to counter that. There's no guaranteed weakness to blocking. If you hit an enemy while they're blocking two or three times, they'll counter attack you (which you can usually block yourself), so naturally you'll want to grab them as soon as you see them start blocking... except they can counter attack or immediately escape from the grab too. It can make it a little frustrating when there's no guaranteed way to hit a boss especially, as they block over and over, besides using an assist or your megacrash, which costs GP. That's the one thing that bugged me about this game, but frankly, it may be a skill issue and there's a proper counter to it I've yet to figure out. I really don't know.
Other than that, I had a lot of fun with this game. Like I said, I didn't enjoy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World very much, so I was surprised by how much I liked this. If you're a fan of that one, River City games, or Scott Pilgrim in general, I'd absolutely recommend picking this up. It's available on all platforms (Switch, PS4/5, Xbox, Steam) for $28.99. There's also a demo available, so be sure to try it out yourself if you're undecided!
Special thanks to the game director, Jonathan Lavigne for sending me a code to check this out!
