Mendiktisaintek Brian Yuliarto mengatakan distribusi dokter dan dokter spesialis melalui Sistem Kesehatan Akademik merupakan pengejawantahan dari arahan Presiden Prabowo Subianto.
Menteri Kesehatan Budi Gunadi Sadikin mengungkapkan saat ini Indonesia mengalami kekurangan dokter spesialis. Budi Gunadi mengungkap total gap dokter spesialis dibutuhkan 10 tahun ke depan mencapai 70 ribu dokter spesialis. Budi Gunadi mengatakan Indonesia hanya mampu mencetak sekitar 2.700 dokter spesialis per tahun, atau dibutuhkan 26 tahun untuk memenuhi 70 ribu dokter spesialis.
Budi mengatakan kekurangan dokter spesialis ini harus segera diatasi agar penanganan kesehatan masyarakat lebih optimal. Guna mempercepat kebutuhan pemenuhan dokter spesialis, Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi, Sains, dan Teknologi dan Kementerian Kesehatan resmi meluncurkan Program Akselerasi Peningkatan Akses dan Mutu Pendidikan Tenaga Medis.
Kemendikti Saintek telah mengkoordinasikan perguruan tinggi dalam jejaring kemitraan sistem kesehatan akademik dan membentuk Satuan Tugas (Satgas) untuk akselerasi pemenuhan dan distribusi dokter dan dokter spesialis mulai tahun 2025.
