Living the Ordinary | Ruby Shrestha | TEDxQuest International College
In her talk “Living the Ordinary,” Ruby Shrestha reflects on the seemingly insignificant choices that quietly shaped her journey from a teenager who simply wanted to lose weight to becoming a powerlifter who learned to embrace strength, failure, and persistence. Her story begins with an ordinary afternoon at a gym. She wasn’t there to become a powerlifter or to compete. She simply wanted to fit into society’s expectations of what a young woman’s body should look like. Yet one small decision—to pick up the weights instead of staying with cardio became the first thread in a journey she could not have imagined at the time.
From discovering the joy of becoming stronger, to stepping onto a competition platform, to experiencing failure and choosing to return the very next Monday, Ruby explores how possibility is built through ordinary decisions repeated over time.
Her message is simple but powerful: we often wait for the perfect moment, when in reality, action creates opportunity. The choices that seem small, uncomfortable, or insignificant today may become the threads that weave the most meaningful parts of our lives tomorrow.
Under the theme “Threads of Possibility,” Ruby invites us to stop waiting for an extraordinary sign and start pulling at the thread already in front of us, one ordinary decision, one imperfect attempt, and one day at a time.
Because sometimes, the extraordinary is not found in a single life-changing moment.
It is woven through the ordinary. Ruby Shrestha is a dedicated weightlifter and athlete who has represented Nepal in competitive weightlifting, demonstrating strength, discipline, and determination through her sporting journey. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
