The Eagle and the Hen

One evening, a disciple asked his master,

"Master, why do some people spend their lives chasing greatness while others are perfectly content with an ordinary life? Were some of us born to fly, and others born to stay in the coop?"

The master smiled.
Instead of answering, he led the disciple to a farm.

There, they watched a group of hens pecking at the ground.
"They seem happy," said the disciple.
"They have food, shelter, and each other's company."

The master nodded.
Then he pointed toward the mountains.

High above them, an eagle circled in the sky.
It flew alone.
It searched constantly.
It faced storms, hunger, and danger.
The disciple frowned.
"The eagle's life seems much harder."
"It is," replied the master.
"So which life is better?" asked the disciple.
"The hen's... or the eagle's?"

The master remained silent for a long moment.
Then he asked,
"Can the hen become an eagle?"
"No."
"And can the eagle spend its life scratching the ground like a hen?"
"It could," the disciple answered.
"But it would never stop looking at the sky."

The master smiled.
"Exactly."

"The mistake people make is believing that everyone is meant for the same life.

Some seek certainty.Others seek possibility.
Some build beautiful homes and
some others cross oceans.
There is no shame in either."

The Moral
Not everyone dreams of climbing mountains.
Not everyone dreams of staying home.
The purpose of life is not to become someone else's version of success.
The purpose is to discover your own nature—and to have the courage to live in harmony with it.
Because the greatest tragedy is not living an ordinary life.
