This video is about:
🌌 At the centre of our Milky Way lies Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole containing roughly four million times the mass of our Sun. Yet astronomers have now found something extraordinary racing around this monster: a star called S301. Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer and its GRAVITY instruments, researchers discovered that S301 travels closer to Sagittarius A* than any other star observed there so far, reaching speeds of around 25,000 kilometres per second—more than 8% of the speed of light. Its extreme orbit is giving astronomers a remarkable new way to investigate what happens to space and time close to a black hole.

⭐ S301 takes roughly eight years to complete an orbit around Sagittarius A*. During its closest approaches, the star enters a region where Einstein’s general relativity becomes dramatically important. A massive object curves spacetime, but a rotating black hole can also drag the surrounding spacetime along with it—an effect known as frame dragging or the Lense–Thirring effect. Scientists expect this subtle distortion to gradually alter S301’s orbit. By precisely tracking those changes over the coming years, astronomers hope to directly constrain how fast Sagittarius A* itself is spinning, turning a tiny point of starlight into a probe of some of the most extreme gravity in our galaxy.

🕳️ But Sagittarius A* is nowhere near the upper limit of how enormous a black hole can become. Black holes range from stellar-mass objects formed through the evolution of massive stars to supermassive black holes containing millions or billions of solar masses at the centres of galaxies. Some of the most extreme known examples reach tens of billions of solar masses. Understanding how such enormous black holes became so massive is an important problem in astronomy: they can grow by consuming surrounding matter and through mergers, while observations of very massive black holes in the early universe continue to challenge scientists to explain how rapid growth occurred within cosmic time.

🔭 In this video, we explore the extraordinary discovery of S301, how astronomers can track a star moving at more than 8% of light speed around Sagittarius A*, and how its orbit could eventually reveal the rotation of our galaxy’s central black hole. From there, we travel outward to understand the enormous range of black-hole sizes, why some black holes become millions or billions of times more massive than the Sun, and how the universe managed to create cosmic giants far larger than the black hole sitting at the centre of the Milky Way. S301 may appear to be just another star, but its extreme journey could help us test our understanding of gravity in one of the most hostile environments imaginable.
