Langkah ini diambil meskipun Gubernur Illinois JB Pritzker berulang kali menolak campur tangan federal.
Gedung Putih beralasan pengerahan ini untuk melindungi aset dan petugas federal.
Keputusan tersebut memicu ketegangan antara pemerintah federal dan pemimpin negara bagian Illinois.
Pritzker mengklaim pengerahan ini adalah manuver politik yang disengaja.
Di sisi lain, Gedung Putih menuduh para pemimpin lokal Chicago gagal mengatasi masalah keamanan di wilayahnya, dilansir Al Jazeera.
Keputusan mengerahkan Garda Nasional diumumkan hanya beberapa jam setelah insiden baku tembak terjadi di Chicago.
Insiden ini melibatkan agen penegak hukum federal dan sekelompok pengunjuk rasa.
Peristiwa ini terjadi di tengah meningkatnya protes terhadap operasi Imigrasi dan Penegakan Bea Cukai AS (ICE).
Trump mengizinkan pengerahan 300 tentara ke kota terbesar ketiga di AS itu, meski wali kota dan Gubernur JB Pritzker menolak.
Menteri Keamanan Dalam Negeri, Kristi Noem, bahkan menyebut Chicago memang layak disebut “zona perang”.
Namun, kubu Demokrat menilai langkah ini hanya taktik politik Trump untuk menunjukkan kekuasaan otoriter.
Gubernur Pritzker menuduh Partai Republik justru menciptakan kekacauan agar punya alasan mengirimkan lebih banyak pasukan.
Sementara itu, survei CBS menunjukkan mayoritas warga AS (58%) menolak pengerahan militer ke kota-kota. Meski begitu, Trump tetap bergeming dan menegaskan tidak akan mundur dari kebijakan kerasnya.
Trump bahkan menyebut Portland “sedang terbakar” dan penuh pemberontak, klaim yang dibantah banyak pihak sebagai tidak sesuai fakta.
Meski demikian, sejumlah sekutu Republik seperti Ketua DPR Mike Johnson tetap mendukung narasi Trump bahwa Amerika sedang menghadapi “zona perang sesungguhnya”.
