Muchi Muchi Pork! is a bullet hell shooter from CAVE, originally released in arcades in 2007. It was ported to the Xbox 360 in a double pack with Pink Sweets, and now in 2026, they brought that 360 port to modern platforms, the PS5, Switch, and PC (no Xbox this time).I've always really liked this game, but I never put much time into it. So this new port was a good opportunity for me to go back and learn it. The game system is pretty simple: using your lard shot to destroy an enemy causes it to drop medals. When you let go of the lard button and switch back to your regular shot, you automatically suck up all of the medals on screen. Each time you spawn a medal, its value goes up, starting from 100, then 200, 300, and so on, all the way to 10,000. Once you get to 1000, though, the value increases by 1000 each time, so in total, you only have to level it up 19 times from the start. If you fail to pick up a medal before it falls off screen, the value resets to either 1000 (if you're currently at max value), or 100 if your current medal value is less than 10,000, so it can cost quite a bit for score. It's a similar system to the programmer's previous games, Battle Garegga and Batrider, only adjusted to accommodate the far higher enemy count and scoring excess that's more typical for CAVE's games. It's a perfectly executed blend of the two styles, so it's a shame that this game isn't more popular. I'm guessing the aesthetic turned some people away, but I pretty much always like cute, colorful worlds in games. What's not to love about chubby pig girls flying around on exercise bikes, fighting sheep and cows for unknown reasons?
The other main thing to note about the mechanics is that your lives max out at 5, and you get an extended every 10 million points (plus a hidden 1up on the stage 3 midboss). It encourages you to score as much as you can, and it also means you're free to die without much (or any) penalty. There are points where you'll want to have a full stock of lives, then burn through all of them to maximize your score on the bosses, then rebuild your life stock in the next stage. That type of boss scoring can turn people off when they see it because it does look kinda boring, but it's fun to actually do. None of it is free, there's randomness in how the bosses move and attack, so it keeps you engaged when you're actually playing it.
Finally, this is version 1.00, which is the same as the original arcade game. By default, this port uses version 1.01, which is very similar with just a couple of significant changes. 1.01 is always two loops, whereas in 1.00, you have to complete the first loop without dying in order to do the second one. Your lard meter also fills up faster, and your lard shot drains it slower, so it's more forgiving when it comes to setting up scoring opportunities. I'm just playing 1.00 because I want to play the game in arcades when I go to Japan next month. I haven't really tried 1.01 yet.
The port itself is mostly the same as it was on the 360, but there are some differences. The most significant ones are the new gadgets, which replace the (useless) rank meter from the 360. Now you can see detailed (and useless) information about the rank, as well as boss health, their timer, how many enemies you have left to kill before a single medal drops, and your score breakdown in each stage. The UI is pretty simple, but the boss health being visible and even the medal countdown can be super helpful. The health bar would be great for helping you build strategies, but unfortunately, training mode still sucks in this port. There's no boss or midboss start option, so you have to play the who stage every time you want to practice. It was inexcusable on the 360, and it's even worse now since they didn't improve it. The online leader boards also mix scores between 1.01 and 1.00, which is another dumb flaw that got carried over from the original release. This port also doesn't include the arranged soundtracks they made for the 360, or the Matsuri mode for MMP, which puts Pink Sweets bosses into the game for no reason. There is one bug on the 360 that they did fix, though, where a wave of enemies in stage 5 were delayed, so now it's accurate to the arcade version. That's nice.
The PC version also isn't great since it doesn't have any significant video options. The game runs at a low resolution, and playing full screen on a high resolution display makes it kinda ugly from poor scaling. Hopefully that gets fixed.
This port isn't without its flaws, but it's still very good overall. It plays great, and the gadgets are a nice addition, so I'd say this is the best way to play this game at home. The $39.99 price might make it hard to attract casual players, but I think it's totally worth it, even for Much Muchi Pork alone. This is definitely one of the best releases of 2026.
