From deep cleaning our apartment (ōsōji), eating soba before midnight, HATSUHINODE aka watching the first sunrise of the year, visiting a Japanese shrine for hatsumōde, opening our New Year fortunes, eating traditional osechi food, and even buying Japanese lucky bags (fukubukuro)… this is how New Year is REALLY celebrated in Japan.Japanese New Year is the most important holiday of the year, and the traditions are way more intense than I expected. Some were peaceful, some were chaotic, and some were honestly terrifying (you’ll see).
