Fanta’s Halloween advert was called “certified AI slop” after a cinema viewer shared their reaction online — but the story is more complicated than a bad review. In this video, we look at Fanta’s AI-powered Halloween campaign, its four original monsters, the werewolf DJ and Ghostface, and why the advert sparked debate about whether major brands are using AI at the expense of creative craft. We also examine Zappi’s reported ad-testing results, including brand recall and short- and long-term impact, while considering what those figures can — and can’t — tell us about the campaign’s success.
Then we compare Fanta’s campaign with McDonald’s Netherlands’ AI-generated Christmas advert, which was removed just three days after release. We also look at the AI-design criticism surrounding Fanta-sponsored Fright Nights at Thorpe Park, while separating what’s confirmed from what hasn’t been established. Is Fanta building a Halloween world people will want to revisit, or is the AI becoming more memorable than the idea? This is a closer look at AI advertising, brand storytelling, visual design and the role of human creativity in campaigns made with generative tools.
