Fedora 44 Beta Is Here – Linux Kernel 6.19, GNOME 50, and KDE Plasma 6.6.2 First Look
Fedora 44 Beta has officially arrived, giving us an early look at the next generation of Fedora Linux. This release is powered by the new Linux 6.19 kernel and introduces the upcoming GNOME 50 desktop for Fedora Workstation, along with KDE Plasma 6.6.2 for the Fedora KDE edition. In this video, we explore the most important changes in Fedora 44 Beta and what they mean for Linux users. From performance improvements in the Linux kernel to desktop updates in GNOME and KDE, Fedora continues pushing the boundaries of modern Linux development.
Fedora 44 also brings several interesting under-the-hood improvements. These include the DNF5 backend for PackageKit, support for the Nix package manager, better gaming compatibility with the NTSYNC kernel module, and smarter package storage through hardlinked files. Developers will also benefit from updated toolchains, including GCC 16, LLVM 22, Go 1.26, Ruby 4.0, PHP 8.5, and many more.
We also look at new features such as automatic DTB selection for ARM64 systems, support for Budgie 10.10, persistent overlays for USB installations, and improvements to Fedora Cloud storage using Btrfs subvolumes.
Since this is still a beta release, it is mainly intended for testing and bug reporting before the final Fedora 44 release expected around April 2026.
If you want to see where Fedora — and often the Linux ecosystem — is heading next, this early preview gives a great glimpse into the future.
