Pemerintah resmi mencabut Izin Usaha Pertambang 4 perusahaan tambang di Raja Ampat. Namun ada 1 perusahaan yang izinnya tidak dicabut, yakni PT Gag Nikel yang melakukan pertambangan di pulau Gag.PT Gag Nikel telah mendapatkan izin operasi sejak 2017 dan produksinya dimulai sejak 2018. Izin produksi pertambangan PT Gag Nikel berlaku hingga 2047, dengan luas wilayah tambang sebesar 13.136 hektar.
Secara aturan, Indonesia sendiri telah memiliki Undang-Undang soal pertambangan di pulau kecil. Aturan tersebut tertuang dalam UU Nomor 7 tahun 2007 dengan perubahan UU Nomor 1 Tahun 2014 tentang Pengelolaan Wilayah Pesisir dan Pulau-pulau Kecil (PWP3K).
Menurut aturan tersebut, ”pulau kecil” yang didefinisikan sebagai pulau yang luasnya sama dengan atau kurang dari 2.000 kilometer persegi atau sekitar 200.000 hektar tidak boleh ditambang.
Pulau Gag yang hanya memiliki luas wilayah 6.500 hektar masuk dalam kategori pulau kecil.
