Chimon Deutsch naît en 1927 en Europe de l’Est. Adolescent, il traverse les pogroms, puis la Shoah. À 18 ans, en 1945, il a survécu, mais il est seul : toute sa famille a été assassinée. Sans repères ni avenir précis, il trouve refuge à Londres. Il entend parler d’une yéchiva dirigée par Rav Moché Schneider, qui accueille des jeunes brisés par la guerre. Lorsqu’il s’y présente, Chimon avoue n’avoir rien appris depuis des années. Le Rav l’accueille avec humanité, reconnaît son parcours, mais hésite : le niveau est élevé, et Chimon n’a aucune base. Chimon insiste. Pour lui, c’est la yéchiva ou la rue. Le Rav accepte. Dès le premier jour, Chimon se rend compte qu’il ne sait ni lire ni étudier une Guémara. Il écrit alors une petite annonce qu’il accroche dans la salle d’étude, demandant simplement que quelqu’un lui apprenne. Pendant trois jours, personne ne s’assoit avec lui. Il est salué, mais reste seul.
