BRICS vs G7 is becoming one of the biggest stories of the 2026 global economic order. Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, Russian President Vladimir Putin took a sharp dig at the G7, saying that BRICS countries accounted for more than 40% of global GDP over the last five years, compared with 29% for the G7.

Putin argued that the global economy is undergoing a structural shift, with emerging economies increasingly becoming new engines of global growth. He also criticised Western sanctions, trade restrictions and attempts to limit the economic development of other countries.

The development comes amid the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where India is hosting the expanded grouping. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted BRICS' growing economic significance, stating that the grouping represents around 50% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP and more than 25% of global trade.

The BRICS grouping has become an increasingly important platform for emerging and developing economies, while the G7 remains a major grouping of advanced industrial economies. The latest summit highlights the growing debate over whether the centre of global economic power is gradually shifting away from traditional Western powers.
