Mindestens 18 von ihnen sollen bei dem Versuch die Küste schwimmend zu erreichen, ums Leben gekommen sein. Spanien setzte das Militär ein. Über den Landweg gelangten hunderte Menschen auch in die zweite spanische Exklave Melilla.
