Penampakan ini terjadi kurang dari 48 jam sebelum digelarnya pemilihan umum (pemilu), yang telah diwarnai dengan pembunuhan sedikitnya 37 calon wali kota.
Dilansir Al Jazeera pada Sabtu (1/6/2024), pernyataan dari kantor kejaksaan negara bagian Puebla mengonfirmasi kematian Jorge Huerta Cabrera.
Ia dibunuh oleh orang bersenjata di Kota Izucar de Matamoros, tempat di mana ia mencalonkan diri sebagai wali kota.
Korban adalah kandidat dari Partai Hijau, sekutu Partai Morena yang berkuasa saat ini.
Otoritas setempat mengatakan, istri Huerta Cabrera dan salah satu rekannya juga terluka dalam serangan itu.
Saat ini, kantor kejaksaan masih menyelidiki pelaku dan motif pembunuhan.
Sebagai informasi, Pemilu Meksiko akan digelar pada Minggu (2/6/2024) besok.
Namun, kampanye pemilu telah diwarnai gelombang serangan terhadap para kandidat.
Menurut data dari konsultan keamanan Integralia, jumlah kandidat yang dibunuh sejak musim Pemilu 2024 mencapai 37 orang.
