Kota ini diperkirakan berusia 3.500 tahun dan berdiri antara 1800 hingga 1500 SM.
Penico adalah wilayah yang diyakini sebagai pusat perdagangan antara wilayah pesisir, pegunungan Andes, dan lembah Amazon.
Kota tersebut terletak sekitar 200 kilometer dari Lima, Ibu Kota Peru, pada ketinggian 600 meter di atas permukaan laut.
Rekaman drone menunjukkan adanya struktur bundar di teras bukit, dikelilingi bangunan dari batu dan lumpur.
Selama delapan tahun penelitian, ditemukan 18 struktur seperti kuil, kompleks perumahan, dan benda upacara.
Artefak yang ditemukan mencakup patung tanah liat dan kalung dari manik-manik serta cangkang kerang.
Peneliti menyebut lokasi Penico sangat strategis untuk perdagangan antarkawasan.
Temuan ini juga memberi petunjuk penting soal peradaban Caral, yang tertua di benua Amerika.
Penelitian dipimpin oleh arkeolog Dr Ruth Shady.
