John Long (Pacers) Scoring Some Buckets Against his Former and Future Team (Pistons)
January 20, 1989 - For those who weren't around, John Long was a Pistons staple during the "before" times, spending eight seasons with the club and topping out as a 20-point scorer before being traded in the 1986 offseason. Long's departure coincided with the Pistons' emergence as a true contender, relegating Long's name to the history books once the Bad Boys era came into full swing.Alas, there was a happy ending for John Long in Detroit. He was waived by the Pacers about one month following his eight-point performance against his former team in the game shown above. With Joe Dumars recovering from a broken hand, that opened the door for the Pistons to swoop in and re-acquire Long for the remainder of the season.
Long's 1989 role in Detroit was a significant departure from how he got down earlier in the decade. Yet, even as a de facto 12th man, Long was able to play a contributing role in helping the Piston earn their first NBA championship in franchise history.
Interesting career for John Long, altogether. While it appeared as though he'd come to the end of the line in 1991, Long actually returned to the league at age 40 to join the Toronto Raptors in their inaugural season. Former Pistons teammate Darrell Walker served as head coach at the time with Isiah Thomas operating as the top dog in the front office.
