Kemunculan ini terjadi beberapa hari sebelum gempa besar mengguncang Rusia.
Petroglif adalah seni ukir prasejarah yang biasanya dibuat sebagai bentuk komunikasi atau kepercayaan.
Di Hawaii, simbol ini terakhir kali terlihat utuh pada 2016.
Sebanyak 26 petroglif terlihat di Teluk Pōkaʻī, Pulau Oahu, ketika air laut surut.
Ukiran tersebut memperlihatkan bentuk batang mirip manusia yang diyakini sebagai gambaran peristiwa masa lalu.
Penduduk asli Hawaii menyebut kemunculan petroglif sebagai peringatan dari leluhur tentang perubahan iklim dan potensi bencana alam.
Praktisi budaya setempat, Glen Kila, mengatakan bahwa naiknya permukaan laut menjadi salah satu pesan penting dari simbol tersebut.
Petroglif tersebut berasal dari sekitar tahun 1000 hingga 1400 Masehi dan biasanya tertutup oleh pasir dan lumut.
Namun, antara Mei hingga November, air laut yang menyapu batu terkadang menyingkap kembali simbol-simbol itu.
Media lokal mencatat bahwa kemunculan lengkap petroglif ini terjadi hanya tujuh hari sebelum gempa besar Rusia yang memicu peringatan tsunami ke Hawaii.
