Ngày 4-7, ông Nazar Voloshyn - người phát ngôn của nhóm tác chiến-chiến lược Khortytsia của quân đội Ukraine - cho biết rằng các lực lượng Ukraine đã rút quân khỏi khu vực Kanal (miền đông TP Chasiv Yar, tỉnh Donetsk), tờ The Kiev Independent đưa tin.
Ông Voloshyn cho biết quyết định này được đưa ra vì các vị trí phòng thủ của quân Ukraine trong khu vực nói trên đã bị phá hủy nặng nề, theo đó các chỉ huy đồng ý rút lui về các vị trí an toàn hơn.
Theo The Kyiv Independent, sau khi giành quyền kiểm soát được TP Avdiivka hồi tháng 2, các lực lượng Nga đã chuyển trọng tâm sang Chasiv Yar - một TP nằm trên khu đất cao, cửa ngõ giúp tiến sâu vào tỉnh Donetsk.
Hồi cuối tháng 6, ông Voloshyn từng nói rằng quân đội Nga đã bị đẩy lùi khỏi khu vực Kanal nhưng phía đối phương vẫn chưa từ bỏ ý định giành kiểm soát toàn bộ Chasiv Yar. Các lực lượng Nga từ khi đó cũng tăng cường tấn công vào Donetsk, trong đó một trong những mũi đánh chính là nhằm vào Chasiv Yar.
