A unos 200 km al norte de Bishkek, el murmullo del agua marca un antes y un después para el paisaje árido local. Se trata de la renovación del canal principal en la región del lago Issyk Kul, parte de la tercera fase del sistema de irrigación construido por China. Iniciado en 2018 bajo la iniciativa de la Franja y la Ruta, este fue el primer proyecto de su tipo en el país. Para 2021, se completaron unos 40 km de canales en las zonas de Issyk Kul y Batken, en la aldea de Ak Olon.
