Indonesia belum memiliki kapal induk hingga saat ini.
Jika upaya itu berhasil, maka kapal buatan Italia tersebut akan menjadi kapal induk pertama yang dimiliki Indonesia.
Kepala Staf Angkatan Laut (KSAL) Laksamana TNI Muhammad Ali mengungkapkan, rencana akuisisi itu masih dalam tahap pembahasan dengan pihak Italia.
Langkah ini disebut menjadi bagian dari penguatan armada sekaligus memperluas kemampuan operasi TNI AL di laut.
Demikian diungkap Ali saat ditemui di atas geladak KRI Brawijaya-320, yang bersandar di Dermaga 107, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta Utara, Senin (8/9/2025).
Ali mengatakan, kapal itu akan digunakan dalam operasi militer selain perang (OMSP).
Kendati begitu, menurutnya, juga tidak menutup kemungkinan digunakan untuk operasi militer perang.
Rencana akuisisi ini tak lepas dari ketertarikan TNI AL terhadap kapal induk kecil yang dimiliki Italia dan Turki.
Diketahui, pada Mei 2024 lalu, SAL Muhammad Ali bahkan berkesempatan mengunjungi ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi yang sedang melaksanakan latihan sebagai bagian dari Naval Diplomacy. Kedatangan Ali kala itu disambut langsung oleh Deputy Chief of the Italian Navy, Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto.
