Wacana penangkapan itu mencuat imbas kerusuhan yang terjadi di Los Angeles.
Menurut Trump, Gavin sangat pantas ditangkap karena selama kepemimpinannya, ia melakukan pekerjaan yang buruk.
“Gavin senang dengan publisitas, tapi saya rasa itu ide yang bagus. Dia telah melakukan pekerjaan yang buruk,” lanjut Trump.
Atas hal itu, Trump mengaku setuju dengan pernyataan Kepala Penegakan Imigrasi Tom Homan yang mengancam akan menangkap pejabat negara bagian apabila menghalangi razia imigrasi federal.
“Saya akan melakukannya jika saya jadi Tom. Saya rasa itu hal yang bagus,” ujar Trump] di hadapan awak media.
Pernyataan Trump muncul saat ketegangan antara pemerintah pusat dan negara bagian California, yakni seusai pemerintah federal mengirimkan 2.000 personel Garda Nasional ke Los Angeles tanpa persetujuan gubernur.
Diketahui dalam surat yang dikirimkan ke Menteri Pertahanan Pete Hegseth, Gavin Newsom mengatakan, pengerahan itu merupakan pelanggaran serius terhadap kedaulatan negara bagian.
